Koonisso Mallum - Shrimps Recipe

This is a Sri Lankan dish made with small dried shrimps. Which we call Koonisso. A tasty dish that can be served with String hoppers, Rice, Roti or with a loaf of Bread

 

Ingredients Needed,

 

  •       - 100 g Dried shrimp
  •       - 1 Cleaned Coconut grated
  •       - 3 pieces goraka
  •       - 10 Small Red onions
  •       - 1 Sliced Tomato
  •       - 2 Sliced Kochchi miris or Red Chilies
  •       - 8 Sliced Garlic pods
  •       - 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  •       - 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  •       - 1 teaspoon Chili powder
  •       - 1 Sprug of Curry leaves
  •       - 1 teaspoon Fenugreek
  •       - 1 teaspoon Mustard
  •       - 1 teaspoon Curry powder
  •       - 1 teaspoon Pepper
  •       - Salt to taste
  •       - 1 Cup Water

 

How to Prepare,

 

In a pan, heat 1 cup water and add the shrimps to it. ( clean and wash well thoroughly before adding it to the water as Dried fish specially koonisso is well known for containing quite a lot of sand in it) Then add the onions, all the spices mentioned above, garlic, chilies, fenugreek and the Chopped tomato. Add salt to taste. Leave to simmer until cooked well. Once it is cooked, (this would take around 10 minutes), add to it the grated coconut. Stir well to combine and let simmer for another 5 minutes. Once cooked serve with your favorite dish. We did not use oil to it so it is low in fat as well.
